Grandpa's Medicinals
My mom and I are going through things in preparation for a spring rummage sale! While we were sorting we came across a box of my grandfather's vintage and antique medicinals! Some are funny! Some are just plain awesome! I love the old glass bottles! You can't find those anymore! I had so much fun with them, that I photographed them! I thought that you might like to see them too! Back when my grandpa was using these, home remedies were pretty much all that they had!

We found medicine to treat both farm animals and humans for mange! I didn't know Walgreen's had been around that long, because we have only had them in Cheboygan and Petoskey for about 5 years! But, we found Boric Acid Powder from Walgreens! I don't know for sure what Boric Acid was used for, but my best guess would be for making a cleanser or soap? Correct me if you know!

Here are two different types of Iodine that I believe were used as an antiseptic! I am not sure though! I also found this bottle from Northgate Pharmacy! I don't know what it is exactly or what it is for! I could read that it has eucalyptus, creosote, and chloraform in it! That sounds like poison to me! LOL It is in a glass bottle with a dropper in it! It has me intrigued!

Merthiolate was even used early in my lifetime! It is used to disinfect or kill bacteria in a cut or burn! It has a lid with a brush on the bottom to apply it onto the injury! Let me tell you, it stings!!!!

I have NO idea what Flaxseed is for! Can anyone fill me in? I love the tin box that it is in though!

I know Vicks Vapo Rub is still circulated and used today! However, these were upopened and untouched! Plus, it is in a pretty blue glass jar! We think this was bought in the 70s! Now it comes in a little plastic jar that is much smaller with much less Vicks in it! I mentioned already that it is still widely used! Well that is because it still works very well ! It will break up congestion in your chest and help clear your sinus all at the same time!

Camphorated oil ! Camphor is still used in some body products today such as dandruff shampoos and skin toners! I am highly allergic to it! The bottle says it is excellent for sprains, strains, bruises, and soreness caused by excessive cold and fatigue! This comes from the Cheboygan Drug Company, which hasn't been around in my lifetime! I grew up and spent all but 6 of my adult years living in Cheboygan, so this is really old ! We looked, but couldn't find a date! I love this antique bottle too!

Argyrol's! It says that it is silver protein, but we couldn't find a list of it's uses! It was $1.79 which was a lot of money back in my grandpa's prime! I love that we have the box that it came in too!

Watkins Antiseptic and Foot Powder! I won't write out what it says because it is easy to read in the photo! I love the tin can it is in! Watkin's products are still sold today! However, it is really hard to find a dealer! My mom buys a lot of her spices, dessert mixes, and home cleaning products from her Watkin's lady! It isn't something in a store! It is a home dealer type of program! If you are familiar with Amway, Avon or Mary Kay Cosmetics, it works much the same way!
Well there you have it! I hope you liked looking back in history as much as my mom and I did ! I tried to convice her to give these to me, but she said no! (: So, the next best thing is photos! Besides, I can share photos with all of you!
If you have more knowledge of these products, please share it with me! I would love to learn more! Do you have any home remedies that you use and swear by? I would LOVE to hear them! Let me know what you think!
You'll ♥
